The following is a public statement from Jared Burkhart, Executive Director of the Michigan Council of Charter School Authorizers regarding last week’s informative study from IFF Research on Detroit children’s access to quality K–12 public school options.
“The IFF study is useful and informative as Michigan authorizers work to interpret both the demand for and performance of charter public schools across Detroit. Data that supports and furthers our understanding of where educational needs are greatest is something we always welcome and support.
The report’s finding that four out of five Detroit children could not access a performing school is troubling and highlights the need for continuing transformation in Michigan’s K–12 schools. Our state’s charter sector is profoundly committed to being part of the change our students and families deserve and demand."
